Nylon absorbs water and expands, which is the only major downside to using it. It probably just took longer than your paddling trip did, so you didn't see it until after you got home. If you take a hair dryer or heat gun to the skin, it will probably shrink back to it's original shape.

If the boat is new, frame shrinkage will also make the skin go slack. The varnished skin has very little elasticity, so it only takes a tiny change in dimensions to create slack in it. Again, heating it may tighten it up acceptably, as it softens the varnish enough to allow the skin to shrink.
