Well, if it were only that, then I'd agree, but I skinned a boat in #10 duck and I hope to never do it again. Take the PITA factor of skinning a boat and multiply it by about 5 or 6 for canvas, which is vastly harder to sew and involves pliers, voluminous cursing and blood loss. Then there's the fact that the canvas is just not nearly as strong as similar weight nylon and I start to wonder what's going to happen the first time I hit a pointy stick or scrape a barnacle.
Anyway, canvas has indeed worked for decades, and it is kinda strong and it shrinks when wet.
But it's not for me.
