Paddle: "Painting" of Aleautian paddle.

I see that many Aleutian paddles are painted. Apparently red and black. I read that I need to mix appropriate pigment with linseed oil.... and paint the paddle with it.
I have bought the pigment and linseed oil from a paint shop and I am about to embark on the exercise above. But then i stopped as you guys have been such a help to me I wanted to ask for advice and experience in using linseed oil/pigment as a paddle paint please.
Any does; dont's; watch out for...etc will be much appreciated.
