: Nick I think uses vertical strips to form the cockpit coaming riser. I just
: hot glued them to the cutout and yellow glued them to each other to do
: this. Works well enough. Normally laminated strips are used for SOF's
: rather than strippers. Others have made composite coamings, but they are
: trickier as some sort of mold is required.
I laminated ash and sapele on my Outer Island for the lips (and ash, sapele and red cedar for the coaming risers a la Nick's technique); for the Isfjord I'm building now I've used white pine for both riser and lips. Provided the strips are cut thin enough, they bend pretty well, so try 1/8" by 1/4" for the lips. It doesn't hurt to steam the strips. For the Isfjord I sprayed them lightly with water and applied a heat gun to make them bend more easily, and one can even loosen them up quite a bit with just the heat gun applied gently to a dry strip.
If the bend at the front of the coaming is too severe to make without breaking strips, Nick has a nice trick in his first book. Laminate a long U shape from the back of the coaming up around the two sides, leaving the bow end open. Let dry, cut them off, then create another laminate across the bow end to complete the shape. The picture shows where the laminate joins.
