I've had good luck with the Feathercraft rudder that I installed on my Great Auk when I built a SailRig for it. I had originally purchased the SmartTrack system but exchanged it for the Feathercraft when I realized that the SmartTrack would have to be mounted too low on the stern of my kayak. Like you, I was also concerned that it would act as a sail when not in the water. I did install the SmartTrack foot pedals, and they work fine after several adjustments. But if I were to do it again, I would go with a set of Yakimas - fewer moving parts, fewer adjustments, and less money.
