: that had a thin film dried rather dry -- easily sanded to a powder. But,
: areas that skushed out between the parts are hard -- just not as hard as
: normal epoxy -- yet, anyway.

Mix up a small batch the same and try it on some scraps, then test to destruction. You should get an idea if it is OK.
