Actually the outside of the coaming would likely look better for everyone if it were unglassed, it's not just you
But that's where the strength is, even with the strips epoxied to the cutout the edge is such a small area there would be little strength no matter how well the joint.
Otherwise the inside of the coaming can be glassed, the strips alone just arn't strong enough. Specially when removing the skirt, you can put alot of strain on these joints, don't want them failing.
