I used a 1/4"-20 nylon bolt/nut to secure the skeg to it's housing. From what I'd read prior to building, skeg 'chatter' could be an issue if there was a lot of play. Knowing that would drive me crazy, I did what I could to keep things fairly tight and snug. If, for whatever reason, the skeg needs removed from the housing, just remove the bolt and add dabs of chaulk when re-installing to make watertite.

The control knob has a couple of 1/4"-2o x 5/16" set screws binding on the cable. The cable was twisted as these were set so that they would rotate towards the boat when the twist was released.

I liked the feel of the 'tensioned' system, and would have kept it if I could have come up with a simple/dependable method for the control device. Just couldn't come up w/ it. The push-pull cable seems to work well. There's enough friction inside the tubing to keep things static, and it doesn't take much effort to engage movement up or down. I used 3/32" stainless steel cable in a 1x17 build. It's reasonably stiff stuff. Think I'd avoid 7x7 or 7x17 builds, as they might flex too much.
