: Gunwales are the same size. I had them nailed together when I cut to final
: lingth, shaped ends and cut mortises and marked deck beam posisions.

Ah, I see. Instead of screws, you might try a "Spanish windlass" at each of the temporary forms to keep your gunwales tight to them.
