: That is very close to what I have done with my last two strip built kayaks.
: They are mostly 5.5mm Paulownia, which would be close in weight to 4.5mm WRC.
: The glass is exactly as you describe.
: If you can wait a couple of days until I return home, I can give you more
: exact figures, but I can give you some rough figures now.
: The 4.5 metre one has a bit over 4.5 metres surface area (I think, but I can
: check) and weighs under 10kg without the seat and footrest, So that is
: about 2.2 kg/square metre. The 5 metre kayak has about 5 metres surface
: are and before I fitted the hatches and bulkeads weighed about 11kg,so
: that is about the same weight per square metre.
: I can check the surface area when I get home if this info is useful. My
: recollection of the surface area might be out by 5 to 6%.
Btw, if you're looking for ultimate light weight with a stripper, shop for the wood carefully, the outer light colored WRC is often considerably lighter weight than the darker colored wood, sometimes by nearly 1/2.
Personally if you want really light, you might think about the project I'm working on now, building it partial SOF partial strip boat. A light frame with the chine area stripped to give the round bottom shape and using a light skin for covering can give you a very light boat that's pretty strong. There is a limit to how light you can make the stripper and keep it strong, but doing it over a light frame combines the strengths of a SOF with shape of the stripper. Specially works well with my dual covering method, covered first with light aircraft heat shrink dacron then cover that with light glass. Done carefully you can have a very strong cover that's around 10 or 11 ounces per yard, difficult to achieve this with any other method.
