I would try a cabinet scraper to remove the plastic. I have found it more controllable in where material is being removed than sandpaper. I always smooth the epoxy goobers with a cabinet scraper on plywood panel scarf joints and can remove epoxy with minimum removal of adjacent unepoxied wood.

6 mil construction polyethylene is a wonderful thing on a work table when gluing with epoxy.
