Dental floss works fine. Most people double it over, but it's your call wether or not it's necessary. There are some people who say it's o.k. to use waxed floss, but there are almost no finishes that will adhere to wax, so why take a chance?

Another option is braided dacron backing line used in fly fishing. It comes in some pretty heavy weights. I prefer the backing line because dental floss wasn't designed for this type of thing, and the fly line is at least designed to be under tension. Whenever you use something in a method it's not intended you risk failure.
