Hi Sage,
I used fine artists colour on mine with linseed as the oil base, Daler-Rowen, I think. I put it on with a cloth and rubbed it in well. It seems to have soaked into the timber as it didn't rub off with use.
I can't recall the exact colour name but it was ochre based.
