: In a nutshell: use as little epoxy as possible, which may be accomplished by
: treating it as if it cost $100000/lbs.
: If you don't bang the boat on the rocks you can use 4oz glass. If you use 4oz
: S glass you'll end up with boat not only lighter but much stronger than
: standard 6oz glass. Easy on hardware - use mostly foam and wood, not metal
: and plastic.
Yep, I agree! I built the Raven using one layer of 6-oz glass on the bottom, one layer of 4-oz glass on the deck and seam tape on the inside seams. No heavy end pours and as little epoxy as possible. That kept the weight to just over 12 Kgs. She is as light as a feather and strong enough to run the river.
I am working on the S&G NH right now, using only 4-oz glass on the hull and deck, tapes on the seams and probably a piece of closed cell foam for the ends. I am going to try to keep the weight of this beauty below 30-lbs, hardware included, meaning thin fillets for any seams. For deck lines I will use only a perimeter line and one bungee set-up for holding stuff upon the deck. Hope this helps.
