I just use plywood coamings on my Yost boats and use the plywood base putting th fabric between the base and the riser. Works fine. I don't screw the coaming down anymore as the nuts and screws on the underside can be tough on your skin, I dowel the upper parts to the base using yellow carpenter's glue, then if you ever need to remove the coaming it comes apart fairly easily.
