: I just use plywood coamings on my Yost boats and use the plywood base putting
: th fabric between the base and the riser. Works fine. I don't screw the
: coaming down anymore as the nuts and screws on the underside can be tough
: on your skin, I dowel the upper parts to the base using yellow carpenter's
: glue, then if you ever need to remove the coaming it comes apart fairly
: easily.

Thanks all.
I have 3 references for nylon skinned "traditional" boats that recommend sewing (Cunningham's Greenland Kayak, Morris's Skin-on-Frame boats, The skinboat.org web page). The Yost design clamps PVC coated fabric. Then there's Bill Hamm's comment about protruding fasteners. And I am concerned about sealing that joint with a flexible base.
I guess I'll drop the base ring and sew the coaming on (fabric rolled at least once). Now I need to rethink the design of the coaming before I glue it together.
We're still in the carpentry stage, but I'm trying to plan ahead to maximize the use of the blocks of time my son has free.
