A technically sound wing paddle stroke is a technically sound forward stroke, wing or no. One of the characteristics of wings is that they enforce good forward stroke mechanics.
"Interesting that the stroke is shown from above, the best way to properly show what is happening. The alternative is to show it from the front (not as good) but never show it from the side as so many do."
"Never"? There are many large and small elements in a technically sound forward stroke and no one view can show them all. Overhead is very good indeed, but it's hard to find a proper vantage point and that view will not tell you much about how the top hand is moving, or about the catch, etc. A front view will tell you little about the blade position at the catch, stroke length, wrist alignment, an incomplete picture of effective rotation... You get the picture.
I have no interest in a flame war about paddle types and usage, but I will state categorically that there is no single answer, no 'best' paddle, just as there is no 'best' boat nor 'best' paddling style. What I think of as proper stroke mechanics has evolved as the way to propel a boat forward in the most efficient way. It says nothing about steering the boat with the paddle (and in fact pretty specifically excludes it), ignores bracing and rolling and so on. But if the question is "How do I move a boat forward through the water as quickly and efficiently as possible?", then my answer is "With a wing paddle and anatomically and dynamically efficient stroke mechanics." That answer would be partially or completely stupid if the question involved playing in rock gardens, hunting walrus, whitewater (except for downriver racing), and other paddling not necessarily involving speed and mostly straight lines.
