Brian,
Since I was using fiberglass scraps cut on the bias into strips for the outside seam, the edges of my scraps would have frayed if I had just applied epoxy to the whole wide of the strip. That could have been sanded out, but by using the masking tape under the edge of the fiberglass strip, then trimming along the edge of the masking tape with a razor blade or utility knife when the epoxy is green, you get a very clean straight edge on the glass strip bonding the deck and hull. That clean edge can easily be sanded smooth.

I also used this method when adding extra fiberglass layers on the bow and stern stems, and glassing in the foot rest studs.
