: Dura-Tuff can be bought for about $25.00/quart on the web.
For comparison, I think I paid ~$28 for a GALLON of Zar last time.
: I like it because you can recoat in about 1.5-2 hours, so I was able to coat
: my SOF in one day. ZAR requires a day in between coats, as I recall.
True. I typically apply one coat per day.
: Dura-Tuff gets less glossy if you use more pigment to color it.
That makes sense, as artist's oil colors are not glossy.
: The downside of Dura-Tuff is that it is solvent based, and it is noxious
: solvents. High quality organic respirators are a must, even painting
: outside, and it will continue to off-gas for at least a day. Leave that
: puppy outside until well dry! (My house stunk that night and the next
: day!)
Although Zar is also oil-based, Dura-Tuff is much more noxious. I find with Zar that the solvent flashes off within the first hour and you're left with just the scent of the oil/resin curing, which can be strong, but it isn't unpleasant and is not harmful or intoxicating.
: I put 4 coats on a 17.5' kayak, and I used about 2.5 quarts.
I've put 5 coats of Zar on 17-18' boats and it takes ~3 quarts.
