Brian and Dave,
One of the benefits of using bias-cut strips is that all the fibers cross and reinforce the joint. With fiberglass tape, only half the fibers cross the joint. On the inside, I use regular tape for ease of application, but on the outside, I prefer bias-cut strips.
I think one layer of glass across the joint inside and one layer on the outside is more than enough. Especially if you use bias-cut strips.
