Hardwoods, like ash and oak are usually used for steam bending, softwoods generally don't respond well with steam.

Personally I'd rip that piece into thinner strips and laminate them together after they are bent, bending to a relatively small diameter with 1/2" will be a serious challenge. Unless you are talking a long pointed flat stern cockpit shaped kinda like a Klepper's cockpit, then won't be a problem.
