the gray/black Frost King brand is the exact same material CLC uses. I don't see why the 3/4" wide stuff doesn't work,,worked for me because I made sure to make the flanges wide enough to fit it. You don't say anything about the specific model or type of hatch you're making. Is it a flush hatch? in that case 7/16" is too thick and you're better off with 1/4". 7/16" is suitable for the older Chesapeake hatches where there's significant variability in the front hatch fit.

It really helps to identify the problem before ranting.
