: 1) Someone has recently given me a bunch of 40+ year old cypress lumber
: (2"x8") to use on my kayak for strips. I have always heard that
: it's best to use dry wood on projects, but does wood ever become too dry
: for building kayaks?
: 2) If the wood is adequate, what size strips should I cut off for the deck
: (I'm building a hybrid).
: 3) Could someone give me a direct link to the correct cove and bead router
: bits? I'm overwhelmed at the number of router bits available and don't
: have a clue what to look for.
: Thanks, and sorry for all of the newbie questions!
Unless the wood has been stored in a very hot and/or dry area, it shouldn't be too dry.
I use these bits: http://www.woodcraft.com/product.aspx?ProductID=129686&FamilyID=1869
The price is pretty good and the quality is great.
I like to use 1/4" strips. Cypress, however, is a bit heavier than the standard Western Red Cedar, so you might want to use 3/16" strips. If you want to use 3/16" strips, don't worry, the 1/4" bead and cove bits will work.
Good luck, post pictures, and don't worry about asking questions, we all do it.
