I use a regular handheld power saw, but it's a nice, powerful one with ball bearings, a thin kerf finishing saw and a zero clearance ply sole. I clamp a 2 ft long guide to it and rip away. I find it is nearly as accurate as a table saw, I typically get within 1/64 on initial cut width and runout, but setup must be perfect. I had a problem earlier with chips getting under the guide which caused bigger runout errors until I put a vac pickup on it.

The finish is good enough to take glue, or sand if it's an outside surface: no planing needed.

The handheld saw has an advantage over a fixed saw, because the length of strip can be the full length of the workshop without opening a door, an important point when I'm working in the Winter. It's also faster for multiple identical cuts, as I work on a cutting table with a top of 2 inch foam, so I can just rest the plank on top with an end stop and make cut after cut. A table saw is quicker for setup if there's only one or two cuts. I have installed vac and power outlets in the ceiling, I recommend that to anyone trying this method. I have a lighter, cheaper saw that also gives good results, just a bit slower.

This setup is also better and safer IMHO than a table saw for cutting ply: I have several guides consisting of a ply base with a straight batten guide on; the first time it is used the ply gets cut exactly where the blade is going and after that it is very precise and fast. The zero clearance sole gives a very clean cut even on splintery stuff.
