Didn't work for me while I was ice-running during my first fall of frozen river paddling. I had 4-5 layers of 6-oz glass on the keel (bow) complete with a graphite layer and within 5 day trips, that glass was chewed through to the wood (thank god I had a good fillet in the keel). The edges of the ice can be very very sharp. The rest of the hull was fine, it was just the leading and trailing edges that took the beating and failed the test. That is why the VJ's keel now sports a brass rub strip. After 5 years, that brass looks great, gets even shinier with each year of messin' around in the gravel. Bear in mind that the way I use my kayaks is somewhat rougher and more carefree/less than most folks, I think.
