: To answer the heat problem generated by using graphite: I have found that
: using hex-Boron Nitride (HBN) works just as well as graphite and the
: white, reflactive surface it creates keeps the kayak cooler during hot
: weather. The HBN is a little more challenging to mix to even consistency
: to achieve a nice uniform coating. Bear in mind that I used the 5-micron
: particle size stuff. Donnie (owner of Waters Dancing Kit Kayaks) tried to
: use it on one of his projects and wasn't thrilled that the final finish
: did not look as uniform as one can achieve with graphite. That said, I
: personally am not so worried about how the bottom of the kayak looks since
: it is under the water most of the time. The HBN-epoxy mix consistency can
: probably be improved with a better mixing method than stirring with a
: scrap of okhume plywood. I plan on using the HBN to coat the bottom of my
: S&G NH, I'll let you know if I find a way to improve the mixture
: consistency and get a smoother more uniform finish. I will say that as far
: as preventing scrathes and gouges goes, the HBN works as well as graphite
: powder and it does look good on the hull. I also think that having HBN on
: the bottom of the kayak is ideal since in case of the need for rescue, a

As long at the boat is carried with the bottom down I don't think the heat problem is an issue. I've left my Greenlander on the roof for weeks at a time carried bottom side down and never noticed while taking the boat off the roof even in the middle of August that the bottom was any hotter than the rest of the boat. It's under water when the boat is in use.

Maybe this week I'll get pictures. Working 12 hour shifts right now and this doesn't allow a heck of alot of free time.
