: Hey guys,
: I built a skin on frame version of Brian Schulz F1 last summer and have been
: pretty happy with it being my first real kayak. That said, it's not really
: useful for me since we don't get much surf here. I went out with a friend
: who had a 3,000 dollar, 17' fiberglass boat and it could have paddled
: circles around me and the F1. I'm looking to build another skin on frame
: which will be able to keep up with my friends. My main goal here is
: speed/efficiency. A skeg or rudder may be in order, too. Which design do
: you recommend for me? I'm browsing Tom Yost's website and he has a few
: designs which look appealing, but I don't really know the performance
: difference between them. Maybe the Sea Rider or Sea Glider? I'm 165 lbs.
: I'll use this boat to do some light camping, but as I come from an
: ultralight backpacking mindset, I can fit everything I'll need into any
: design. So basically, what boat should I build for dropping in the water,
: and going from one cool place to another, having a fun day and maybe
: playing in the waves a bit?
: I used Ballistic Nylon and Corey's Goop for my last boat. I think I'll try
: Dacron and a cheap sealer for this one. Just add something for abrasion
: resistance to the keel.
: Can a simple, one chine design work well enough to go out with fancy, modern
: boats that cost as much as cars?
: P.S. I see you can post images here, so I'll link to a photo from my recent
: trip. It's of half of a rainbow that emerged after a Hail and Lighting
: Storm behind our boats (including my F1).
Hi Michael,
My Sea Ranger is seriously fast, also seriously skinny and the Sea Rider is skinner yet. Depends on how narrow a boat you are used to.
I've been planning on building the Sea Dart for pretty much the same reasons you have, it's not as skinny at 21 1/2" but should be pretty fast. Tom worked up the design for me to allow more room inside, so should have room for camping supplies. His greenland style boats are tiny inside, would be lucky to pack a lunch in my Sea Ranger.
The Sea Dart though is multi-chine, so it's a bit harder to build, but only slightly more so.
