I built one nearly the same, but the workpiece sits on the table and has a cover over it to hold the pieces down. I guess it is like yours, but upside down. This avoids the problem of throwing the cutoff piece back at you. I have used it for a long time with no issues. The only problem is that it is only useful for one thickness (I use it for joining the cedar strips).
