Nice old saw! I had a similarly inconveniently placed switch on my saw and decided that it wasn't worth the risk to keep using it. I bought a new switch and mounted it in a box that's flush with the front of the fence so I can shut the saw off by hand or with my hip. I then disconnected the original switch and wired the new one in it's place. It didn't require modifying the saw itself, so in your case, you could keep the original look.
