I had a similar experience lat year when paddling a newly-built canoe rather nervously around Lake Vernon. It was more tippy than I was used to and there were lots of powerboats around, but all were very polite giving me lots of space and even slowing down.

And then a gorssly overpowered boat roared by flat out at pointblank range throwing up a monstrous wave which tossed me around like flotsom. The canoe handled it well fortunately, but it turned out to be a Police boat. I excused the rudeness as it was an emergency, they were headed straight back to the docks and were obviously fresh out of donuts.

It's not always the drunks, kids and rednecks that cause the problems.
