The shorter kayaks I've built area 11 ft , 12 ft and two just under 14 ft . They are no harder to build than the several other longer kayaks I have built. The bends the gunnels and chines undergo are no harder to do than for a longer kayak.
Each kayak no matter what length has two ends , it is the middle section which can vary substantially in length.
Common 1 x 4 strapping comes in a variety of lengths , a bit of searching in the wood pile has yielded good gunnel wood .
