As others have said, lower your center of gravity, and commit the time to get used to the boat.

I wonder what effect adding some weight in the kayak would have to your feeling of stability? By sinking the the boat in the water a little farther, it should help in theory. Of course, you want to make sure that weight is stable, does not move around, and is low. Perhaps a couple of plastic bags with damp beach sand placed in the hatches would work.

And tell your wife to quit laughing or you'll build her one too.
