Speaking from my experience the only way I could keep it from happening was by clamping the plywood before I drove in the screws. You can't drill to large a hole of the screw will not hold.

To be fair on that boat I used exterior plywood as it was a cheap and dirty boat. Marine plywood probably would be less likely to split.

But I still say lashing is quicker, better and cheaper. :)
