I positioned my skeg rather differently and I've been very pleased with its performance. I have a couple thousand miles on the boat now since the addition of the skeg and this is how I'd do it again.

This placement does not track as strong as the more traditionally aft position but I've found it quite sufficient for my needs. I also enjoy an appreciable degree of manoeuvrability even with a full deployment unlike aft mounted skegs. And I seldom have a blade in the air!

I spent some time with a group of sail boat enthusiasts who were fond of playing in stormy waters and this is where I first entertained the idea. Afterward, I experimented with strap mounted mock-ups while deciding where to put the skeg.

Last year I was caught in a very nasty storm on Shoshone Lake in Yellowstone and the skeg proved itself with flying colours.
