That's pretty much my plan for my next paddle too, I just need to get access to some woodshop tools again.
Its not all that perfect, I eyeballed pretty much the whole paddle, its way more fun than measuring like crazy.
Basically after I cut the tapers and roughed the loom I just marked off where the main transitions were and then just started hacking away with a carving knife. I found that I like to rough it out aggressively, get it shaped as fast as possible, so then I still feel like I am making progress as I start making finer and finer passes with a spokeshave. The sanding steps later kinda suck.
Good luck, and you are going to love it, there is nothing quite like a handmade wooden paddle.
