: . . .The gunwales will be a problem. If I remember correctly - I epoxied the outer
: gunwales on and also screwed them from the inside. The inner gunwale
: (Epoxied in place) covers the screws (overbuilt, I know). A sabre saw with
: a metal cutting blade may do it.
The shape of the hull will let you cut away most of the outer gunwale with the sabre saw. Leave about 1/4 to 1/8 inch of wood so you don't cut into the underlying strips. Normally I'd suggest a plane for removing the rest. Planes don't do a good job cutting cured resin, so when you got through the gunwale the plane would just slip around a bit. But those screws complicate the matter. Hitting them dulls the plane.
As you cut with your sabre saw you'll find each screw. Mark their locations.
Remove the screws by sanding them with a belt sander. Use a 100 grit belt, and just sand in the areas where each of the screws are. Sand the screws down to the level of the buried glass. Try not to go through the glass. The wood sands easy, the glass will offer some resistance for a while-- so stop when you hit it.
After those screws are sanded down you can use a plane to remove the rest of the wood from the gunwale, or thin it to where you can heat the area, melt the resin, and peel off the glass and resin.
Just a thought.
