I just came across an amazing photo on Paddling.net, taken by Carl Tjerandsen from Ledyard, CT. I notice that Carl is also credited with still photography on Nick's blog report about the Labor Day 2008 Rough Water Symposium, so that may be where and when this photo was taken. In fact this may already have been posted here; if so I apologize for the re-post. The photo caption reads:
"Nick Schade's Guillemot Petral no worse for wear after a prodigious Hanna swell drove her deep only to release the pair skyward in a rarely seen pirouette. Image taken at Napatree, RI where long boat surfers from four states gathered to experience the power of the sea."
Incredible photo timing, incredibly skilled (and probably a bit lucky, too) kayaker, and proof that wooden boats are pretty darned incredible as well!
