I'm not actually considering building one from this material (not till I finish my stripper anyway), but thought I'd throw the idea out there just in case it was of interest to someone.
I have recently collaborated on a transparent PVC SOF (kid sized) and the owner is very excited to be able to see what's under the water while paddling. The mother had some concerns about her little darling putting to sea in little more than a tablecloth and some sticks, but seems to have come around after some hugely successful sea trials, and the resulting grins.
Making something entirely transparent (the clear skinned SOFs still have wooden frames and stringers) would be quite spectacular.
The material would be great to use - it's extremely strong, definitely heavier than ply, but probably not that different at the end of the day to a molded plastic boat. 3mm sheets were just what I saw on the shelf, it comes in a range of thicknesses. Either way it would be significantly more resilient than a PVC SOF.
Bait.. well I guess if there's something big enough to see us as bait, not seeing it coming could be an advantage!
Having had an Orca swim directly under my kayak a couple of years back I would have loved to have been able to see him as he went underneath. If he'd wanted to eat me, I can't imagine that the 4mm of rotomolded polyethylene would have slowed him down much at all.
