: design of the Mystery was to comply with the "Fast Touring
: Kayak" class of the Blackburn, which was (I think) defined by max
: length x min width. There was an additional "Racing Kayak"

: waterline L:W and this places the Night Heron in "Fast Sea Kayak
: (FSK)" and the Mystery in "High Performance Kayak (HPK)"
: with all the Surf Skis etc.

: The change of rules doesn't change the performance of the boat, it just puts
: you in some fast company. With respect to the Night Heron there could be
: some considerable disadvantage if the Mystery has less stability. You
: can't paddle at top efficiency if you are nervous, though this could be a
: overcome with plenty of time in the boat.

Most pure race boats are pretty unstable that's very true, suspect looking at the Mystery's plans that it would be challenging. I'd leave the final comment to Nick, he certainly understands that design better than anyone else.
