Paddle: fixing a crack *Pic*

A crack developed in my GP. It's not from use, it must have stemmed from a fault in the wood. I was thinking I would use a dremel and a pointy grinding tool to route out the wood around the crack (maybe 1/8" or 3/16" wide) and fill with thickened epoxy. I was also thinking I would glue in a dowel perpendicular to the crack. Does this seem reasonable?
