Welcome Roger! all you have to do to 'join' is put up with the likes of us..

As far as brads go, they can be used, but you would need to fire them through a scrap strip to keep the 'heads' above the surface. This will enable you to pull them before faring and and final sanding.. or just forget the staples altogether.

I use Bungees to hold stuff in place, you can get a bunch cheap by taking apart one of the "spiders" for pickup beds bought at Harbor freight.
