Sand usually shifts well with a vacuum cleaner (you can duct tape a
smaller diameter longer pipe to reach into corners). But the problem is that
salty sand never dries because salt is hygroscopic, so wash it out with loads
of fresh water first, then air it well and use a hair dryer or old fan heater
to dry it out very thoroughly before vacuuming. No need to use heat - the
idea is just to push dry air around. A brush on a stick is also useful to
loosen sand from corners. If its really tough, get a hose on your hairdryer
to push air into corners, tape that to the hose on your vacuum cleaner so
it sucks right next to where you are loosening the sand, and poke it with
the brush on a stick at the same time ! I don't usually need to go to those
lengths with a hardshell kayak as the last bit of sand isn't doing any damage,
but if sand under the keel stringer is causing wear, you may want to be that
extra bit tough on the grit :-)
