I haven't read all of the responses so forgive me if I've repeated anything.

I'm coming at this problem/situatuation from a slightly different perspective. A couple of years ago, I tried my first ocean racing ski and have been hooked ever since. These boats typically have a beam of approx. 430mm or 17" in ye olde speak. As you can imagine, these boats a heaps tippier than a typical sea kayak but are suprisingly managable on the flat and in the ocean with some adaption to technique and equipment.

A shorter paddle(preferably a wing) and developing forward stroke technique makes the paddling of narrower craft that much easier and enjoyable.
There are some beneficial side effects as well. Proper forward stroke technique with a wing doesn't contribute to tendonitus, develops core stability, and you might be lucky enough to build some mass in the lats as well.
