: Two-part polyurethane is close to auto clear coating and I am now a big fan
: of it. I have done 13 boats in Varnish and now 2 in polyurethane. The poly
: has high UV resistance.
I used a two part polyurethane specifically designed for marine use. The weather was cold and my first two brushed coats took 14hours to go off to a tack free stage instead of the 15min it would have taken in summer temps. Lots of dust and suicidal insects needed sanding off. I took the kayak to a local car painter for the final coat in the downdraft spray booth. Brilliant! I don't know how easy it is to repair but it certainly is tough.
: My poly boats have been 6 months in the water now and it is FAR SUPERIOR to
: varnish in scratch resistance.

: I brushed it on. It goes on thicker so hides underlying scratches and defects
: much better than varnish.

: I'll probably never go back to varnish.
