I've found the easiest way to get a good scarf is to tape the ends of the two strips overlapping about 4", one flat atop the other. Then an angled straight line cut will make the same angle for both. Then a swipe or two with your block plane will clean both sides up to make a fine joint. I use about a 20 degree angle to get a good bit of surface at the joint.
