: anyone ever spray automotive clearcoat on instead of varnishing I mean the
: auto clear available are top of the line now and loaded with UV inhibitors
: it would stand to reason that a gun in the right hands could lay down a
: coat or two and save time in color sanding and polishing varnish as well
: as an ounce or two of wieght. Anybody any thoughts?

I build a 21 ft double in 2002 and had it clearcoated. I took it to a body shop. I think it cost me $250. The result is wonderful. I have had the kayak on 8 one week trips most of them in the salt water. The finish still looks great. Sure there are scratches on the underside and a few elsewhere but most could be sanded/buffed out as you would on a car if I was so inclined. I have a 17 ft single under construction right now and I would not even think of varnish. Clear coat is the way to go. I just wax it once in a while.
