: Hey LeeG - I'm curious what you're doing differently re: coaming and thigh
: bracing - just 'rounding off' the coaming? What about the thigh bracing?
You know how the regular coaming spacers on the AT/Coho/Osprey goes from the recessed aft section onto the two forward center panels resulting in the peaked coaming ?
So what I did is use one of the coaming spacers for a curve I marked off a section on the center panels of the glued deck about 1/2" at the center seam on the side of the cockpit then extending forward of the regular point about 4". Cutting out that slender section on both sides resulted in a larger cockpit opening that the new recess piece will fill.
I pressed a plywood piece over that cut out and bent it down into the hole and traced the new cockpit opening outline. Cutting that new plywood piece with the thigh braces extending inward provides the new recess. It's not perfect but with some trimming and sanding it can be bent/wired into place. After that the new recess is glued and the interior/exterior of the deck is glassed and the coaming is applied onto the new recess and the rest goes from there.
The Penguino cockpit is pretty wide and this narrowed it by 1" although you could do it without narrowing it. The net result is a coaming that's a bit below the level of the peak of the deck and no peak in the coaming. I went ahead and built the deck with the extra 3" wide piece of 4mm ply under the deck located 4" forward for the recess but it's really not necessary as this triangulated deck section is pretty solid.
