Hi Charles,
One thing with PVC pipe is that it will flatten with steam heat unless it's supported well. Either spray insulation around the pipe or bed the pipe in dry sand so at least 2/3 of the pipe circumference is covered.
If the pipe is long, use support the full length.
I use PVC piping as a quick-fix solution, if you want a more long-term steaming box, use the foil backed insulation board and make a simple box. Some bamboo skewers to peg it together and duck tape to seal the long edges.
