For the lower bow on Laughing Loon's baidarkas it is suggested to orient the center and outside pieces at 90° to each other. As well, each piece is 1/4" thick. This causes a slight problem for me because I don't see how to do this without having to buy a wide piece of hardwood. To compound this, even if I did get a wide piece, I would have problems planing it to 1/4". For example, I could combine a 4.5" wide piece (which can be re-sawed from 1" stock down to 1/4") with a 12" wide piece, but there's no way I can re-saw 12" on my table saw. Another orientation would require me to use a 7" and 10" wide piece, neither of which I could resaw. So either I'm thinking about this the wrong way, or I need to buy a large wide board of hardwood and rent a planer, or there is a company that sells small pieces of hardwood in 1/4" planed thicknesses?
