I think I eventually got things settled last night. I sort of followed Rob's idea. I took my 1x7 and ripped it in half. I then used 2 passes to re-saw the 1x3.5. Each pass cut through 2". With the blade lower down and less wood being cut, I was able to do this safely. Having glued the planks together again I now have 3 planks that are approximately 7"x14" x 1/4" thick. Two of these will make up the outside laminations. I took the 3rd plank, cut it into about 4" long pieces, and it will be the center lamination orientated 90° to the outside laminations.
